Discover Historic
Waikīkī

The Waikīkī Historic Trail is undergoing a remarkable transformation, poised to receive a revitalization and rebirth, infusing it with fresh vitality and ensuring that its captivating stories endure for generations to come.

ABOUT

Founded on the dedicated research of Dr. George Kanahele, co-founder of NaHHA, we have strived to preserve and highlight the culturally significant sites - wahi pana - of Waikīkī through our Waikīkī Historic Trail initiative. This trail, comprised of uniquely designed "surfboard markers", was born out of a city-private sector collaboration, aiming to restore the 'Hawaiianness' of Waikīkī.

Founded on

Dedication

Since 1997, these markers have guided locals and tourists alike through the rich history embedded in Waikīkī’s landscape. However, after serving dutifully for over two decades, they now require refurbishment and updating to incorporate 21st-century technology. This would make our cultural stories more interactive and accessible to a wider, multi-lingual audience.

Guiding Locals &
Tourists Since 1997

We stand at a crucial juncture in Hawaiʻi’s tourism model, where the spotlight is not only on the attractions but also on the valuable education derived from our indigenous stories, cultural history, and geography. As we strive to rejuvenate the Waikīkī Historic Trail, we aim to carry these lessons forward for our own people and visitors, ensuring our unique cultural narratives continue to resonate for generations to come.
